How Do I Manage My Soreness After Surgery?

We provide each patient with a prescription narcotic (such as vicodin or percoset) with Tylenol to manage soreness, for most people this is more than adequate for relief.

For larger procedures, such as a tummy tuck, patients are given a comfort pump that automatically releases markane, a pain medication, that allows you to breathe easier and move more comfortably.

Dr. Kenevan has seen such a drastic improvement in recovery of tummy tuck patients since he began using the comfort pump that now he won't even perform the surgery without it.

5 Cosmetic Surgery Myths Revealed!

With the information overload of cosmetic surgery available today, it is no surprise that there is also just as much misleading and false information out there as well. Whether it’s over the internet, television, friends or acquaintances, it is extremely important to make sure that the information you receive comes from credible and reputable sources. There is a substantial amount of information that is not accurate.

Cosmetic surgery is real surgery and you owe it to yourself to do your research, talk to people who have had cosmetic surgery and make appointments with board certified surgeons in your area.

Myth #1: You can fix anything with cosmetic surgery.

This is heard almost daily by cosmetic surgeons when a patient calls or comes in for a consultation. There are many factors to consider when someone is choosing to under go a cosmetic surgery procedure. The first thing to ask is, “Is the concern of the patient a real fact or deformity?” and “Will their physical limitations and situation lead to an aesthetically pleasing result in the eyes of the patient and the surgeon?” If the answer is no then the reasons why should be addressed. Cosmetic surgery can not give you a “perfect” body, nor can it fix everything. There are physical limitations limited by our own unique individual characteristics.

Myth #2: Breast Implants cause or increase your risk for breast cancer.

The Institute of Medicine found evidence that breast implants do not cause breast cancer or the recurrence of breast cancer. How ever it is still essential to undergo routine screening for breast cancer which includes: self breast exams, mammograms, and clinical breast exams. Just as you would if you didn’t have breast implants.

Myth #3: You can’t breastfeed if you have implants.

According the the Mayo Clinic, breastfeeding with implants is safe. Because breast milk is considered the primary and best choice for babies, the Mayo Clinic also encourages women with breast implants to breast feed if they are able to do so.

Myth #4: Implants need to be replaced every ten years.

Unless you are having a problem or concern then there is no need to do anything. Some patients may have reasons to want to replace their implants however; it is not required. They are man made devices and there is no guarantee as to how long an individual implant will stay intact.

Myth #5: Liposuction can be used as a weight loss tool.

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery employed to remove excess fat from specific body parts. This surgical procedure is not an alternative to exercise and dieting and should be used only to remove the stubborn fat that does not respond to exercises and diet. Liposuction is not a weight loss method but a method to remove fatty deposits throughout the body. Generally the fat is removed from thighs, chin, buttocks, love handles (abdomen), breasts and stomach for women and chin, waist, breasts and buttocks for men.

See How Easily You Can Acheive Your Surgery Goals!

There are several factors to consider when deciding to have cosmetic surgery. It is important to realize that this is a decision which should be made by you, for yourself and for the reasons that are right for you. The ideal candidate for aesthetic surgery is an individual who recognizes a specific area in which his or her appearance could be improved and has a strong personal desire to make a change

Whatever your reasons for choosing
cosmetic surgery, it is important to have realistic expectations. Improving a feature of your face or body may give you greater self-confidence and add to your sense of well-being, but it is not a guarantee of happiness or improved relationships with others. Surgery can enhance your appearance; the rest is up to you.

According to
Robert Kenevan, M.D. Medical Director at the Avalon Clinic: “In order to be considered a good candidate for surgery I look for these four things: good general healthy, a support system, realistic expectations and have they done any research.”

Over the years, surgeons and psychologists have found that certain attitudes indicate cosmetic surgery is appropriate for a patient.

Is There a Real Flaw or Imperfection?

First, is there a cosmetic flaw that lends itself to surgical correction? Do you have small, large or sagging breasts? Do you have a large nasal hump or bulbous tip? Is your stomach stretched and hanging? Does this flaw lend itself to improvement?

Are You Motivated for Yourself?

You are better suited for
cosmetic surgery if you wish to please yourself, not your family or friends. Can you honestly say to yourself, "I want this operation even if no one but me ever notices anything has changed?"

Are Your Goals Well Defined?

The person who enters Dr. Kenevan’s consultation room and asks a vague, unfocused question, such as "What can you do to make me look better?” or “I haven’t liked the way I look for years." Does not have a clear goal in mind and may not be a good candidate for cosmetic surgery.

At The Avalon Clinic for cosmetic surgery we are committed to building a relationship with you. We want to know about you and your goals. We want you to be so satisfied with your experience here that you will always come back to us and refer your friends and family. Contact us at

The 7 Mistakes People Make Before Surgery!

Here are the most commonly seen mistakes that people make before surgery and we want to help you aviod them!

1. Smoking: It is recommened (and required for many surgeries) to abstain from smoking 6 weeks before and after surgery. smoking can cause delayed healing, wound disruption, skin loss and a longer time to heal.

2. Aspirin: Aspirin or any aspirin like medications can thin the blood and must be avoided at least 1 week before and after surgery.

3. Fish Oil & Garlic: They are the most commonly used supplements that also thin the blood and must be avoided 1 week before and after surgery.

4. Birth Control Pills -Estrogens: Must be avoided at least 2 weeks prior to surgery because of the increased risk of blood clots with any estrogen products.

5. Not Coughing: Aftere some surgeries, such as a tummy tuck, you will be advised to cough on a regular basis. This clears the lungs and allows for easier breathing. Although some people experience mind discomfort with couging after surgery it is extremely important to keep the lungs clear.

6. Not Walking: Everyone will be advised to start walking right away after surgery to aviod any blood clots in the legs and to promote circulation.

7. Eating and Drinking Before Surgery: This can cause stomach acids to enter the lungs, which can cause other isues that could potentially interfere with a safe surgery.

What Complications Might Occur During and After My Surgery?

Concerns over the safety of cosmetic surgery increased recently following the news that Kanye West's mother died after undergoing cosmetic surgery. Serious complications from cosmetic surgery procedures are uncommon and even rare.

Yet with all surgical procedures, there are risks.

If you are in the process of planning your cosmetic surgery procedure now, be sure to discuss the possible risks and complications with your surgeon before your surgery.

Possible complications that can occur during and after any surgical procedure:

1. Bleeding - Some blood loss during and after surgery is normal with any procedure. Excessive blood loss can create more serious complications. If you have a history of excessive blood loss, you should discuss that with your surgeon in detail prior to your procedure.

2. Blood Clots (DVT)- Inform your surgeon right away if you or anyone in your family has a history of blood clots in the legs and lungs before having any surgery. Blood clots can occur as a result of a medical condition or from immobilization. Blood clots are difficult to predict, but there are steps to take to help prevent them: during your recovery process, get up and move around often- avoid staying in the same position for too long.

3. Infection- Infection following surgery is very rare, but it can happen. The risk of infection is approximately 1%. The doctors and staff at the Avalon Clinic will inform you of what you can do before surgery to reduce your risk of infection.

4. Delayed Healing (Skin death)- Is much more common among smokers. If this occurs, the dead tissue is removed and allowed to heal from the bottom up. This takes time.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASPS) has a very informative article titled:

Why Going To The Gym Can’t Fix!

For many women, having a baby is one of the most exciting times in their life, but pregnancy can and usually does change your body in ways that no amount of diet or exercise can correct. It is important for women to know what changes have occurred and which ones they can fix by themselves and by their own efforts, and which ones will benefit from other options… such as cosmetic surgery.

The abdomen and breasts are generally the two areas that are more susceptible to significant changes during pregnancy.

The 3 most common things that working out at the gym can’t fix are:

Stretched Skin
Stretched muscles
Sagging breasts

Your Stomach:

Stomach muscles lose their tone after pregnancy because both the muscles and skin have stretched to accommodate the baby. When they shrink there may be extra skin remaining after your pregnancy.

When abdominal muscles become stretched and abdominal skin becomes loose, no amount of sit-ups will reposition these muscles, and dieting will not shrink the skin. In many instances only an Abdominoplasty (or a tummy tuck) can repair the changes. By repositioning the muscles, removing excess skin and improving the appearance of the belly button, a tummy tuck can help you improve and regain the shape you had. It is recommended that women considering future pregnancies before deciding to have a tummy tuck procedure.

Your Breasts:

Another common problem for women is during and after pregnancy is sagging breasts or breasts that have lost their shape. This is due to weight fluctuations and hormonal changes. Despite your best efforts, sometimes the excess skin and the ligaments simply will not stretch back to how they were pre-pregnancy. Cosmetic surgery can help restore your breasts to a more youthful appearing shape.

Breast lift vs. Breast Augmentation:

A breast lift will reposition the nipple and lift the breast, and improve the shape without changing the size. A breast augmentation will enlarge the size of the breast, giving you a magnification of what you already have.

If you are one of the thousands of mothers who have wished for her old body back, or to even just feel “normal” then you owe it to yourself to have a consultation with one of our board-certified cosmetic surgeons today!
